Update on PCS after 30th June ’11: 750000 workers took action all over Britain, tens of thousands marched in London. Hundreds gathered in Glasgow where other unions such as UNISON, the FBU and UCU gave solidarity messages. The UCU (University and College Union) were on strike along with teaching unions NUT and ATL down in England. Schools, airports, courts etc were disrupted but action is needed to save essential services so that people don’t end up living in Dickensian conditions. And now with swingeing cuts hanging over most of the country several public sector unions including the NUT, UCU and ATL as well as the PCS are on strike. Several more including UNISON, RMT and many others will be demonstrating and speaking at rallies in support of the strikes. Numbers of strikers or demonstrators across Britain are expected to be at least in the tens and probably in the hundreds of thousands. In Scotland there will be action going on all morning and a bus will be going round the picket lines to support the workers. At the end of the morning a rally will take place at 12 noon in Glasgow’s George Square. English Aljazeera (27 May 2011): Pro-reform protesters pack Cairo square: Thousands return to Tahrir Square for “day of anger” demonstrations, pressing military rulers for speedier reforms. Thousands of protesters have returned to downtown Cairo’s Tahrir Square for what they called a “second revolution”, calling for Egypt’s military rulers to speed up the pace of democratic reforms in a country that is still charting its political future. Protesters streamed into Tahrir Square – the symbolic heart of protests that toppled Hosni Mubarak on February 11 – carrying banners reading “Egyptian revolution is not over”. Youth groups that had helped to launch the uprising against Mubarak have dubbed Friday “the second day of anger”. In a Facebook call, the Coalition of the Revolution Youth, which consists of several movements behind the Egyptian uprising, urged protesters to rally for “an end to political corruption.” A large banner hung over the flag-waving crowd, demanding a new constitution “now and not later”. But Muslim Brotherhood, the country’s best organised opposition movement, said on Thursday it was “very concerned” by Friday’s protest. The group, that decided not to participate in the demonstrations, said the revolution had achieved many of its goals, including not only the ouster of Mubarak, but also his referral to trial along with his sons and associates. People’s anger The call to protest can therefore “only mean that the anger is directed at the people themselves
